Reading Task Types, Question Level, Pathway to English
E. This study analyzed the reading task types and reading question levels in two
editions of the EFL textbook Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade X,
published in 2022 and 2025. The purpose of this study was to identify the
various reading task types presented in both textbooks, to identify the reading
question levels based on Bloom's Taxonomy, and to compare the differences
and similarities between the two editions. This study used a qualitative content
analysis method. The data were collected from all reading tasks and reading
questions in both textbooks. The frameworks used for analysis were Brown's
classification of reading task types and Bloom's Revised Taxonomy. The
findings showed that both textbooks include four types of reading tasks:
perceptive, selective, interactive, and extensive. However, the 2022 edition is
dominated by selective reading tasks, while the 2025 edition is dominated by
interactive reading tasks. Both textbooks also include all six levels of Bloom's
Taxonomy. The 2022 edition is dominated by lower-order thinking skills,
especially Remembering and Understanding, while the 2025 edition has more
higher-order thinking questions at the Analyzing and Evaluating levels. The
similarities between the two editions are that both include all task types and all
cognitive levels, but the distribution is different. The 2025 edition uses a more
modern, student-centered approach.
